Some denim fabrics are defined by heavy yarns or irregular textures. Others are defined by precision in construction. The Streamline Selvedge is a lightweight 9.25oz Japanese selvedge denim built around a dense and controlled weave structure that produces an unusually smooth and dark fabric surface.
Despite its lighter weight, the fabric appears visually compact. The tightly packed yarn structure limits the amount of undyed weft visible on the fabric face, allowing the indigo warp to dominate the surface and create a deep, uniform indigo tone. The result is a denim that looks darker and more refined than most fabrics in its weight class.
Woven in Japan and cut and sewn in Canada, the Streamline Selvedge focuses on controlled construction, dense fabric structure, and a clean visual surface.
Lightweight Denim and the Streamline Era
Lightweight denim fabrics became more common as denim manufacturing expanded beyond heavy industrial workwear during the mid-20th century. Fabrics below traditional workwear weights allowed denim garments to be worn comfortably in warmer climates and for longer periods of daily wear.
Rather than relying on heavier yarns, durability in lighter fabrics can be achieved through tighter weave structures and increased yarn density. The Streamline Selvedge follows this principle through a densely packed construction that maintains structure while remaining lightweight.
The name Streamline references the Streamline Moderne design movement that shaped industrial design from the 1930s through the 1950s. Streamlined objects emphasized smooth surfaces, controlled forms, and visual simplicity intended to evoke speed and efficiency.
These ideas were most famously applied to streamlined passenger locomotives, whose enclosed bodies and continuous surfaces created a visual impression of motion even when stationary.
The concept later reappeared in modern rail design, most notably with Japan’s Shinkansen system introduced in 1964, where aerodynamic shaping and smooth exterior surfaces became essential to high-speed rail travel.
The Streamline Selvedge reflects this same design language through its dense weave, smooth surface, and minimal visual texture.

Fabric and Construction
The Streamline Selvedge is a 9.25oz Japanese selvedge denim woven from 100% cotton.
The fabric uses a 2×1 right-hand twill construction, a weave structure historically used in some vintage dungaree fabrics. Compared to the more common 3×1 denim twill, a 2×1 construction creates a slightly flatter and tighter fabric structure.
Indigo rope-dyed warp yarns form the exterior surface of the fabric, while the weft yarns remain undyed. On the interior of the fabric, the weft presents a subtle grey appearance, contrasting with the dark indigo exterior.
The yarns are woven under tight tension, creating a dense weave that limits weft visibility on the fabric face. This construction produces a smooth, uniform surface that prioritizes controlled structure over slub or irregular texture.
Details and Finishing
The fabric is woven on shuttle looms in Japan, producing a white / red / white selvedge edge along the outseam.
The selvedge line itself is unusually narrow, creating a small, compact selvedge edge that reflects the streamlined character of the fabric.
Each pair features a Raging Kong leather patch, a waxed pull-up leather. Pull-up leather contains oils and waxes that shift within the hide when flexed, producing visible tonal changes and surface variation as the leather bends and wears.
Hardware is finished in black mil-spec YKK military hardware, maintaining the dark, minimal look of the garment.
