Chinese New Year Selvedge – Year of the Horse

The Chinese New Year Selvedge series continues for SS26 with a 12.5oz Japanese selvedge denim honoring the Year of the Horse. This ongoing series draws from the Chinese Zodiac, a 12-year cycle that dates back over two millennia and remains central to traditional East Asian calendars.

The Chinese Zodiac and the Horse

The Chinese Zodiac assigns an animal to each year in a repeating 12-year cycle. Unlike Western astrology, which focuses on monthly signs, the Zodiac emphasizes birth year and long-term character traits. Each animal is associated with specific qualities that historically informed social roles, compatibility, and even career paths.

The Horse is traditionally associated with energy, independence, and endurance. In historical agrarian societies, horses were essential for transportation, trade, and military mobility.

Artwork Collaboration

This edition features artwork by Montreal-based comic book artist Andy Belanger, whose illustration appears on the leather patch in gold foil. Belanger’s work is known for strong line work and movement, making it well suited to the Horse motif.

Fabric and Construction

The fabric is a 12.5oz Japanese selvedge denim woven from 100% cotton using short slub yarns. These yarns introduce subtle irregularity without overwhelming the surface. When new, the denim appears relatively clean and uniform, with a soft hand feel and minimal break-in.

Details and Finishing

The selvedge edge features a gold-red-gold stripe. Red and gold are traditionally associated with prosperity, protection, and good fortune during Chinese New Year celebrations. Red pocket bags reinforce this symbolism.

The natural vegetable-tanned leather patch is finished with gold foil artwork. Over time, the leather will darken and patinate, adding wear-based character distinct from the denim itself.
