Galaxy Selvedge: A Multicolored Universe

A few pairs have made it into Brandon’s rotation this season, but Galaxy Selvedge is the one he keeps reaching for. One look at the fabric up close explains why. Red, yellow and blue neps appear across the dark indigo in tiny dots and short streaks, recalling the bursts of color in deep-space photographs.

An indigo rope-dyed warp and black weft give the fabric its dark base and make the multicolored nep stand out. Woven in Japan at 13oz, Galaxy Selvedge starts with a crisp raw feel, while its 65% cotton / 35% rayon blend gives it a softer hand and more fluid drape than an all-cotton denim of comparable weight.

Where All That Color Comes From

The red, yellow and blue are woven into the denim, rather than printed onto its surface. The colored fibers are incorporated into the black, nep-heavy weft yarn before the denim is woven.

Nep refers to the small knots and clusters of fiber within the yarn. These irregularities are usually minimized when producing a smooth, uniform textile. In Galaxy Selvedge, they are an intentional part of the design.

As the black weft passes across the indigo warp, the colored clusters emerge through the surface. Some appear as compact flecks, while others extend into short streaks following the direction of the yarn. Their irregular distribution creates a pattern that changes throughout the fabric.

Turn Up the Cuff

The black weft becomes more apparent on the reverse, where more of the weft yarn is visible. Against the black interior, the multicolored nep appears even brighter. A clean white selvedge edge completes the cuff.

How It Will Age

The fades may develop more gradually than some of the faster-fading fabrics in the collection. With wear, the indigo warp, black weft and multicolored nep will evolve together.

The Horween® Blue Cavalier Ink Chromexcel leather patch has a slightly waxy surface and the tonal variation of a pull-up leather. As it bends and rubs with wear, it will develop lighter highlights and its own patina.

Finished with black hardware, each piece is cut and sewn in Canada.
