The Hawaiian Shirt, otherwise known as the “Aloha Shirt” is a short sleeve shirt in a boxy silhouette with a classic camp collar and finished with coconut buttons. Pinpointing who exactly was the original designer of this shirt is a controversial topic. Legend has it, the original creator of this shirt is Koichiro Miyamoto, “Musa-Shiya the Shirtmaker”, a Japanese tailor living in Honolulu. Koichiro’s wife, Dolores Miyamoto, remembers receiving orders for colorful shirts made of kimono fabric from Shirley Temple and John Barrymore in the late 1920s. The Japanese and Chinese merchants of Honolulu liked to import fabrics from home like Japanese printed silk and cotton yukata, a traditional summer kimono material, to make island clothing for residents and tourists.
