If you’ve ever eaten at a Japanese restaurant, there’s a good chance you’ve seen a maekake without realizing it.
Tied around the waist of a server, hanging behind the counter of an izakaya, or worn by a sake merchant, this simple indigo apron has been part of Japanese working life for more than 500 years. Its dense construction and distinctive texture became the inspiration for the Maekake Dobby, a 12.2oz Japanese fabric that reinterprets this workwear staple for today.
The tradition
Originally developed during Japan’s Muromachi period, maekake aprons became closely associated with merchants selling rice, soy sauce, and sake. More than just a uniform, they served as protective equipment, woven from dense cotton to shield against heat, sharp edges, splinters, and the daily wear of physical labor.
That dense construction became the starting point for the Maekake Dobby.
The fabric
Woven in Japan, the Maekake Dobby is a 12.2oz indigo dobby twill inspired by the texture and durability of traditional maekake aprons.
Unlike a standard denim twill, the dobby weave creates a subtle surface pattern with added texture and depth, giving the fabric a distinctive appearance while maintaining the dense, sturdy character that made the original aprons so practical.
To make the fabric easier to wear from day one, it has been fabric rinsed after construction. The rinse softens the hand and brings out layered shades of indigo throughout the weave, creating tonal variation that becomes more apparent as the fabric continues to age.
The details
The Maekake Dobby is finished with a Horween Cavalier Ink Blue Chromexcel leather patch, pairing deep indigo fabric with a richly colored leather designed to develop character over time.
As both the fabric and leather age, the indigo tones soften and evolve while the leather gains depth and patina, creating a garment that reflects the same long-term wear that made the original maekake aprons such enduring workwear staples.
