The Meaning of Sugi-aya
The Japanese term *Sugi-aya* (杉綾) literally translates to “cedar twill.” Its name brings together two words that describe the appearance and construction of the fabric.
*Sugi* (杉) is the Japanese cedar. The tree’s branches and evergreen needles naturally create an upward V or arrow-like shape. *Aya* (綾) refers to twill and its crossing diagonal structure.
Together, Sugi-aya describes the distinctive chevron pattern we know as herringbone.
Structure & Softness
Woven in Japan from 100% cotton, Black Sugiaya has a substantial 12oz weight without feeling overly rigid. After weaving, the fabric is rinsed to soften the hand and gently plump the cloth. This gives the V-shaped pattern greater three-dimensional depth and makes its texture more pronounced.
The rinse also gives the fabric a comfortable feel from the first wear. Over time, movement and use will continue to bring the herringbone weave forward, allowing the surface to become even more expressive while maintaining its dark, polished appearance.
The Finishing Details
The deep black fabric is paired with a waxed black leather patch and black non-reflective hardware. These tonal details keep the overall look clean and versatile while allowing the herringbone texture to remain the focal point.
