Threads of Mexican Tradition: The Dia De Los Muertos Selvedge Story

Few traditions capture the vibrancy of life and the reverence for ancestors as vividly as Mexico's 'Day of the Dead.' It is against this rich cultural backdrop that the Dia De Los Muertos Selvedge comes to life, weaving the essence of this cherished celebration into the very fabric of its design.

Our journey commenced with the exclusive sourcing of cotton directly from Mexico, chosen for its high quality and connection to the cultural heritage we celebrate. This was then spun and woven on vintage shuttle looms in Okayama, Japan, to create the 12.5oz selvedge denim. By utilizing rope dyed short slub yarns, we achieved an uneven surface texture and a dynamic color tone in the fabric. As the indigo gradually fades over time, the thicker yarns begin to reveal high-contrast vertical fade patterns at slightly different rates compared to the thinner areas. This process not only adds depth to the denim's color but also emphasizes the unique story of each garment as it ages.

Echoing the colorful essence of Mexico, The selvedge ID is a kaleidoscope of colors, reminiscent of the vibrant stripes found in traditional Mexican sarape blankets. This detail is not just an addition to the design; it's a bridge connecting the wearer to the heart of Mexican culture, a continuous thread that weaves through the fabric of tradition and modern expression.

To fully encapsulate the spirit of Dia De Los Muertos, we collaborated with José Ruiz, known as Koopa, a distinguished tattoo artist from Mexico City. His artwork, which beautifully adorns the vegetable-tanned leather patch and pocket flasher, vividly captures the symbolic essence of the Day of the Dead. Through his depiction of skeletons adorning a traditional altar, Koopa celebrates the cycles of life, death, and the eternal bonds that unite them. As time passes, this leather will develop a unique patina, adding another layer to these jeans that ages and evolves gracefully, mirroring the transformative journey of life itself.

The Dia De Los Muertos Selvedge is finished with meticulous attention to detail, featuring contrast stitching that adds depth and dimension, alongside silver metallic buttons and rivets.

This denim is a journey through culture, tradition, and the art of storytelling. It invites the wearer to embrace the spirit of Dia De Los Muertos with every thread.
