The Daihatsu HiJet Jumbo That Fades Like Denim

15 years ago, I was in Okayama on my first visit to Japan. Driving through the beautiful countryside amidst the immaculately kept rice farms by the side of the highway, I got my first glimpse of a keitora. It was a miniature white Japanese pickup truck that looked both capable and cute at the same time. I was smitten. I wanted one.

Fast forward 13 years or so, and I was determined to make the dream of owning one of these machines come true. I studied Japanese car auctions for almost a year and finally found a 1990 Daihatsu Hijet Jumbo with the options I wanted. Several months later, the truck arrived in Montreal and it was a ton of fun. Well actually less than a ton since it only weighs 1200 lbs! (sorry, that’s a car joke).

As fate would have it, around that time we were contacted by the talented and friendly folks at Vivid Vans in Duncan, British Columbia, Canada. As fans of our brand, Nate, Quentin and the VV team had the idea to make a raw denim themed truck with a new and experimental indigo fading paint job. The timing was perfect and we shipped our truck over to them to work on. We absolutely adore the results! To see how everything turned out, please check out my review video here.
